We have basically had three movies on Netflix rotating this month: Penguins of Madagascar: The Movie (Ryan calls this "The Funny Penguins," Conor calls it "Pen-ins"), The Emperor's New Groove (Ryan calls this, "The Talking Llama," Conor calls it, "Ama") and, in preparation for the most wonderful time of the year that is college football season, Rudy.
The boys love it. And when we watch it and Ryan recognizes buildings in the movie and exclaims throughout the movie,
"Hey that's where we go to pray!"
"That's where Daddy married Mama."
"That's where my dad used to work!"
"I walked down that tunnel!"
"Hey! That's where my dad works!"
"Hey! We walk around that lake!"
"We eat at Waddick's sometimes, right, Mom?"
I remember how simply neat it is to be able to share a place so special to Chris and me with our children when everything is a wonder to them. We are diehard Notre Dame fans. I think that's obvious! (And I'll probably write another post in anticipation of the kickoff that's taking place in six days because ... Go Irish! ;) )

But I'll let you in on something that may be a bit surprising ... every other scene in Rudy drives me a little crazy! Maybe it's because I've been jaded since one of my freshman professors, who taught the real Rudy back in the day, gave us the inside scoop on what was written for the movie and what happened in real life. What a burst bubble! Maybe it's because I hate confrontation, and most of Rudy's success is a result of a lack of social awareness and dogged determination. However, I do still think Rudy is one of the best sports movies of all time, and I love elements of the story such as how hard Rudy worked, his immense perseverance, its depiction of the sacrifices a lot of walk-ons have to make (and walk on football players are dear to our heart!), and its demonstration of how beautiful the university and its traditions are.
The Rudy soundtrack alternates between making me weep, pumping my fist and getting goosebumps. Or all three at the same time. And I tear up every single time (spoiler!) Rudy opens his acceptance letter.
Are you a fan of Rudy?
Fun fact: they filmed some scenes for Rudy at the first football game Chris ever went to!
I am part of the Netflix #StreamTeam so I will be writing one post a month about movies and shows that have made me happy to have in our family queue. To be totally forthcoming, I have been compensated with a streaming device and a one year streaming subscription to Netflix, but this is a service that I have used at minimum four times a week for the past four years (and at many points in the timeline, everyday) so you can say that I am definitely excited to be partnering with them. Woohoo!
